How to put forward refutation or opposing argument

Refutations must be specified, researched and completely understood before stating that they are wrong, this will ensure that you are well prepared to answer any counter arguments.

Strategies for opposing a refuting idea:

  1. The Compromise. This is a valid point. To a degree they are right.
  2. Complete disagreement. After reviewing this evidence, there is no way that they can be right.
  3. Proving irrelevance. This point is off topic and has no relevance to our discussion.

Some prompts to get you started:

  • Opposing ideas claim/maintain that....
  • Those who disagree....
  • Those who are in opposition may say...
  • Those who are against this idea...
  • Those who assert that....
  • Some people may disagree with this idea......
  • The claim this because...
  • They put forward this idea because...
  • They claim that...
